Present: Bob Feinbaum, Ed Mason, Howard Wong Guest: Rick Laubscher
Transportation Forum: Bob presented a preliminary plan; discussion deferred until August
Topics Covered: Fort Mason Extension, Future Speakers, and Horizon Challenge
Ft Mason Extension: Rick talked about extending streetcar service to Ft Mason. The original idea was to go through the tunnel. But the National Park Service hasn’t been cooperative and the tunnel is on their land; tunnel upgrades will take at least $ 10 million for seismic work and there is no indication that the feds will shoulder their part (65 %) of the cost.
Currently the E & the F line terminate on the same track Operationally the E line service is highly erratic, but the F line could possibly get to 4 minute headways. Rick proposed a couple of different options to bring streetcar riders close to the Municipal Pier and the terminus of the Van Ness BRT. Option A, which would extend streetcars to the end of Beach Street, and cost perhaps $ 30 million can be accomplished on city streets and would allow for a later extension through the tunnel. Contact Rick at the Market Street Railway for further details.
Future speakers: John Haley, head of Muni Operations was mentioned. So was Peter Donohogue who is proposing a transit assessment district for San Francisco and the new president of the Transit Workers Union. Other possibilities included San Francisco State professor Jason Henderson and Sean Elsbernd who will become chief of staff to newly elected mayor London Breed.
Horizon Challenge: MTC is soliciting ideas for big projects (due September 6). Ed suggested that we put forward a proposal for a comprehensive regional bus system. Bob suggested a rail idea for taking Caltrain to the East Bay to link up with Capitol Corridor service in Oakland
Next meeting: Monday, August 20 at 5:30 PM.
